Style and beauty are important considerations,
but so is storage space. In addition, the look of
many bathrooms is spoiled by clutter from lack of
storage space. Bathroom vanities should have enough
space to store all your bathroom paraphernalia and
look great besides.
Many durable tops are available for vanities
nowadays. You can buy tops in marble, granite,
quality laminates, and Corian. These are all on the
expensive side, but if you’re tempted to go with
something cheaper, remember the bathroom
environment: high humidity and lots of activity. Of
all the places where you need durability, it’s the
bathroom. Anything delicate or susceptible to
moisture won’t last long. Impervious materials like
granite and Corian won’t be damaged by water, nail
polish remover, and even heat from your hair dryer.
If you have your heart set on a vanity with a wood
top and wood accents for your bathroom, you don’t
have to be disappointed. Select the vanity you want,
but substitute the wood top for a durable top made
of any of the above materials. You will be doing
yourself a favor in the long run. You will preserve
your vanity’s beauty for years by making sure it
will stand up to the damp and punishment of ordinary
bathroom use.
Lighting is another important consideration when
buying a bathroom vanity. Regardless of the type of
overhead lighting you have, you will need special
lighting around your vanity. It should be good, but
flattering, lighting. Some types of lighting can
make you look too pale or highlight any blemishes.
You want lighting that makes you feel good in the
morning! A soft color is best. Lighting on both
sides of the mirror is generally better than
overhead lighting for flattering the face.
